Egypt Q2 Jobless Rate Highest since 2018
Egypt's unemployment rate surged to 9.6 percent in the second quarter of 2020 compared to 7.5 percent in the same period a year ago and 7.7 percent in the previous quarter. It was the highest jobless rate since the third quarter of 2018 as government measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 dented the job market. The number of unemployed rose by 480 thousand to 2.57 million. The jobless rate went up in both urban areas (12.5 percent vs 9.3 percent in Q2 2019) and rural areas (7.4 percent vs 6.1 percent).

Egypt Jobless Rate Drops to 7.7% in Q1
Egypt's unemployment rate fell to 7.7 percent in the first quarter of 2020 compared to 8.1 percent in the same period a year ago. The number of unemployed persons went down by 31 thousand to 2.24 million. The official statistics agency CAPMAS clarified that it stopped collecting field data for the first quarter in mid-March, before the government began taking precautionary coronavirus-related measures.
